Jharkhand has a rich traditional culture. Festivals form an important part of its rich culture and traditions. Here are some of the major festivals which are celebrated in the state:
Chhath Puja: This is the most important festival celebrated in the state. During this Chahath Puja “Sun-God” is worshiped by all with total devotion. This festival is celebrated twice once around March and again during November. On this auspicious occasion is about seeking blessings from the forces of nature.
Holi: The festival of colours much like other parts of India is also an important festival in this state. It normally is celebrated around February or March Holi is celebrated with great charm and vigor. People greet each other with colors and thus enhance the feeling of harmony due to which happiness prevails.
Diwali: This is the festival of Lights. Like the rest of India, people from Jharkhand too celebrate Diwali with much enthusiasm. This is celebrated over 2 days, Diwali, celebrated in honor of Dhanvantari also known as the physician of Gods, prior to which they have the Choti Diwali to honor the other deities with “Arti”, lighting of Diyas and Bhajans.
Dushera : is amongst the major festivals of Jharkhand which is much awaited by the people of the state. The Festival celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasur. It signifies the triumph of good over evil.Ramlila also forms a part of the celebrations which commemorates the victory of Lord Ramaover the deamon king Ravana. This whole festival extends over days in the state.
Ramnavami :marks the birth of Lord Rama and is celebrated with much pomp and show much like the rest of India .People celebrate by going on fasts and offering prayers to honor the Lord.
Basnat Panchami: is the festival wherein the arrival of spring is celebrated after the passing of the Cold winter. People of this state take this festival to be full of religious, seasonal and social significance. One of the main attractions during this festival in the state is Kite Flying.
Apart from the several Hindu festivals mentioned above many Muslim festivals is also celebrated in the state with equal enthusiasm and devotion.
Eid Ul Fitr - This festival occurs at the end of the month of Ramzan, is the gayest and falls on the first day of the tenth month of the Hijrah or Muslim calendar. This festival is celebrated in Dhanbad with a lot of pomp and show.
Bakhri Id:- is one of the most important festivals for Muslims in the state. It is observed on the tenth day of the twelfth month in the Muslim calendar.
Muhharam: The most solemn and colorful Muslim function held in the state of Jharkhand is Muharram. This festival commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Holy Prophet. In all cities and towns Muslims take out impressive processions of colorfully decorated tazias, replicas of the martyr's tomb at Karbala.
Certain other tribal festivals include Sarhul, Tusur Parab or Makar and Hal Punhya.
