Brief history of Coal mining in Dhanbad

We had in one of our earlier blogs explained in details about the history of mining in the region. Following independence the need for development of heavy industries was felt in India. Thus "The National Coal Development Corporation" was founded in the year 1956. Ever ince then there has been no looking back. The vast coal mining complex was developed thereafter.
There are many major companies which operate in the region. These include big companies like Tata Steel, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) and Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO). According to Wikipedia the city is surrounded by 112 coal mines. They produce together as much as a total produce of 27.5 million tonnes and an annual income of 7000 million Rupees through coal business.
Dhanbad is also known for  its power generation plants. Hydro Power is being generated at Maithon and Panchet. Tata Power and Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) are setting up a 1050 MW thermal power plant at Maithon. ONGC is using CBM (Coal bedded methane) for power generation at some areas.
Dhanbad is surrounded by many historical places, beautiful lakes and has plenty of scenic beauty as well. Thus people from far and near are also drawn because of its scenic beauty. So the tourism too is fast becoming a growing business in the sector.
In conclusion we can say that thought, though Dhanbad is famous for coal mining but other sectors like tourism are too are fast emerging as the top businesses in the region.
